RIM BlackBerry Curve 8330 (Alltel)

Ah, the joy of a BlackBerry Curve. One of our favorite smartphones ever, the Curve just works—and that goes for Alltel's model too. It's a great buy for anyone who wants a terrific phone with unparalleled messaging, excellent media features, and a bit of Web thrown into the mix. One complaint, though: Alltel could have done a little more to set its model apart from the pack.

The Alltel Curve, in sober gray, looks like a darker, handsomer version of Verizon's model. For a basic rundown of the Curve's design and features, check out PCMag's review of theVerizon or Sprint Curve.

On Alltel's network, the Curve sounds as beautiful as ever. Reception is excellent, and volume is pretty much perfect, with no distortion even at the top level. And the speakerphone is loud and clear. Curves are among the best voice phones we've tested, and this one is no exception. This Curve also got particularly stellar battery life, with over 6 hours of talk time.

Like other Curves, Alltel's has a 3.5mm headphone jack for phone or music headsets and works with mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets. Oddly, I could trigger the VoiceSignal voice dialing with our mono Aliph Jawbone, but not our stereo Plantronics Pulsar 590 headset.

Alltel lets you use the Curve as a modem for your PC (but not for a Mac) on Alltel's EV-DO Rev 0 high-speed network. The carrier provides easy-to-use software that enables a one-click connection—it was a snap to set up. Speeds were slow for EV-DO, though, at around 400 kilobits per second down, but this seemed to be a problem with Alltel's network—our other smartphones ran even more slowly in modem mode.

So what does Alltel bring to the table? In terms of software, the carrier's model falls somewhere between Verizon's sparse offerings and Sprint's richer ones. You get Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger IM clients but no AIM. The free Google Maps for Mobile uses cell-tower triangulation to get a rough location fix, but there's no bona fide GPS (unless you pay for additional software). Buried under an odd icon marked "Axcess Shop" is an information app, which gives you news headlines, weather, stocks, and traffic information.

You can also buy software for the Curve, and this is where things get interesting. Alltel's MobiTV-based streaming Axcess TV ($9.99 per month) is available, along with Garmin Mobile ($9.99 a month) for true GPS capabilities and DynoPlex MasterDoc ($49.95), which provides enhanced attachment viewing. Shape's IM+ ($49.95) adds MSN, AIM, and MySpace IM to the Curve's list. There are also plenty of games to be had, among them Guitar Hero.

RIM's forthcoming BlackBerry OS 4.5 will include support for Microsoft Office document editing through DataViz's DocumentsToGo program, and Alltel will offer a free upgrade to Curve owners. That combined with the standard Curve features, such as the great camera, including video recording; the terrific BlackBerry messaging, including both SMS and MMS; and the new PC software, which helps transfer music and videos over from Windows XP and Vista PCs to the phone, makes Alltel's Curve 8330 as much a winner as its Verizon and Sprint cousins. We think it's the best balance of smartphone functionality for Alltel subscribers.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

The luxurious, unlocked Windows Mobile–based Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 has plenty of features. But it also has plenty of bugs. And at an exorbitant $799.99 (list), I simply can't imagine anyone buying it when there are so many other solid options available for much less—especially in this economy.

The 5.1-ounce X1 is clad in silver metal, but ultimately feels like a slightly clunky rectangle (4.4 by 2.1 by 0.7 inches, HWD), without the rounded corners of devices like the BlackBerry Storm and iPhone 3G. Closed, it's dominated by its supersharp 3.1-inch, 800-by-480-pixel screen, with a bunch of action buttons and a small touchpad below it. Slide the screen to the right and you'll see a usable QWERTY keyboard of small, squarish, slightly bumpy, well-separated keys, but the top row of keys is a little too close to the screen, making them a bit hard to hit. The phone doesn't have an accelerometer—the screen image rotates only when you open or close the keyboard. On the back, there's a 3.2-megapixel camera with an LED flash. There's a microSD card slot under the back cover. (The X1 rejected our 16GB card, even though Sony Ericsson claims the phone should accept cards up to 16GB.)

The X1 offers two major software features that you won't find on other Windows Mobile phones. The big one is the Xperia Panel interface, a new, interactive way of using your home screen. Press the Xperia Panels button and you'll be presented with a set of varied home screens, each with a different take on your media, the clock, the application launcher and/or your PIM information. The home screens are attractive and well thought-out, and on the whole the interface is more usable than the slow TouchFLO you get on the HTC Fuze.

The second feature is a customized version of the Opera Mobile 9.5 browser, which is faster and displays pages more accurately than Microsoft's Internet Explorer Mobile. But Opera seems much more loosely plumbed into the system than on the competing Samsung Omnia. During testing, when I went to the Google Panel to do a search, for instance, the phone launched the inferior Internet Explorer browser.

The Panel interface relies on the 800-by-480-pixel screen to show its miniaturized panels. The downside of the high-res screen is that it takes Windows Mobile's already-small interface elements down to a tiny size. There's a stylus in the corner of the phone, and you'll want to use it, because with itty-bitty buttons like these, using your finger is out of the question.

A quad-band EDGE phone with HSDPA 850/1900/2100 and HSUPA, the Xperia X1 should hit AT&T's and foreign networks at the highest speed possible. When using the X1 as a modem for a Windows Vista PC, I achieved download speeds of around 700 kilobits per second, lower than I expected. On T-Mobile's network, the phone drops to much-slower EDGE speeds.

The X1 is not a great voice phone; its earpiece is a bit quieter than I'd like, and I heard some clipping at top volume on AT&T's 3G network. Voices are well rounded at lower volumes, but that won't do in a noisy outdoor area. The speakerphone suffers from the same issues. Transmissions sounded a bit rough and fuzzy, with lots of background noise coming through. Speakerphone transmissions sounded muddy.

The X1 theoretically works with both mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets and features a standard 3.5mm headset jack for wired headsets. But our X1 had some trouble connecting to both Plantronics Pulsar 590 and Motorola S9 HD stereo Bluetooth headsets. I finally got the S9 HD connected on the third try. The phone does not offer voice dialing. The good news: Talk time was just shy of 7.5 hours on my tests, an impressive result for a HSDPA handset.

I also experienced some stability and connectivity issues. My first sync with a Windows Vista PC took 30 minutes and ended with a crash. My first attempt to connect the X1 to a WPA2 Wi-Fi network also failed (though I was able to connect eventually). On my tests the X1 was also plagued with strange delays. Whether I was hooking up a headset or pressing 'resume' in the media player, sometimes the phone would just seize up for 10 or 15 seconds.

Plenty powerful, the X1 should run Windows Mobile third-party applications well, according to our Spb Benchmark and CorePlayer performance tests. On Spb's general-purpose benchmark tests, the X1 performed better overall than most other Windows Mobile devices, with the exception of the Samsung Epix. The high-resolution screen drags down video frame rates somewhat, but the X1 still came out ahead of popular devices like the Samsung SCH-i760 and Motorola Q9 series. The device has GPS but doesn't come with any mapping or driving-directions applications.

For playing music and video, the X1 has the typical Windows Mobile apps, enhanced by an FM radio and dedicated media panels that bring your media library to the forefront. The phone syncs with Windows Media Player for music, and iPod-formatted videos looked terrific, but a video formatted specifically for a 640-by-480 screen was jerky.

Outdoors, the X1's 3.2MP camera is a stunner. It took sharp, beautiful pictures in real or simulated daylight. But indoors, I had serious problems with blurring caused by slow shutter speeds. The video mode takes 640-by-480 videos at 30 frames per second. They were smooth, but even outdoors there were some visible compression artifacts, which tended to make faces look very mushy. And the problem increases indoors.

The unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 would be a decent smartphone competitor if it weren't so insanely priced. Yes, unlocked phones are always more expensive than subsidized carrier-offered phones, but the X1 costs a whopping $450 more than the HTC Fuze, and $400 more than the BlackBerry Bold (both with two-year AT&T contracts). Worse, it's $350 more than the also-unlocked, Editors' Choice–winning Nokia E71. Sure, the X1 is a luxurious phone, but given the competition, it simply isn't worth the premium, which makes it difficult for me to recommend.

At last, T-Mobile is getting serious about 3G. With decent sound quality, HSDPA speed, Java flexibility, and robust PC connectivity, the Sony Ericsson TM506 is the best 3G phone for T-Mobile so far, and the first one we can recommend with enthusiasm.
Years behind the competition, T-Mobile is finally rolling out its 3G network. The provider has actually launched its 3G network in only two cities, New York and Las Vegas, though it promises more are coming soon. The TM506 is a full-featured 3G phone, unlike the carrier's first four 3G handsets, which were voice-first affairs, designed to help New Yorkers shift away from an overcrowded 2G network. T-Mobile still hasn't launched any of the music or streaming video services, or other flashy data services that have come with other carrier's 3G networks. But with the TM506, T-Mobile offers something that might be just as compelling: the whole darn Web.

The most stylish of T-Mobile's 3G phones, the TM506 is an average-size flip phone (3.7 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches HWD, 3.4 ounces) with a shiny black cover. You can opt for an Emerald version with lime green accents, or an Amber one with a touch of silver. On the front, there's a 2-megapixel camera and a tiny, text-only display that shows time, signal, and caller ID information. Since the text is black and white, it's visible in any light.

Flip the handset open to find a very sharp 320-by-240-pixel screen and a keypad of relatively large, flat, easy-to-use buttons, each one protected by a raised semicircle. A weak backlight, however, barely illuminates the buttons.

The TM506 is T-Mobile's first phone to support HSDPA on its unusual 1,700-MHz band, along with 2,100-MHz HSDPA and 850-, 1800-, and 1900-MHz GSM/EDGE. That means it's the fastest T-Mobile phone so far. It will roam onto AT&T's 2G network and foreign 3G networks, but it won't pick up AT&T's wide 3G coverage here in the U.S.

Although it has the best voice quality of any T-Mobile 3G phone so far, the TM506 suffers from relatively low call volume—a deal breaker for some people. The phone just isn't very loud. Voices sound deep and well rounded, but some background noise comes through the microphone. The speakerphone is also quiet and is loud enough only for indoor calls, although it works with the flip closed. The vibrate feature is strong enough, and ringtones are sufficiently loud. You can even use your own MP3s as ringtones, a rare feature on carrier-provided feature phones.

The phone comes with a mono wired headset and uses an oddball jack that isn't compatible with other standard wired headsets. It hooked up to our Plantronics Voyager 520, and Motorola S9 Bluetooth headsets just fine, but you have to manually record a voice tag for every name you want to voice-dial. Battery life was very solid, with 9 hours 55 minutes of 2G talk time.
After the lackluster cameras in previous T-Mobile 3G phones, the TM506's 2MP one is a welcome addition. It takes clear, slightly over-sharpened photos with nice, punchy colors. I found that it blows out bright areas and has blur problems in low light, which are both common problems with camera phones. I was very pleasantly surprised, though, by the beautiful 30-frame-per-second, 320-by-240 videos the TM506 takes: They're smoother than the video from most other phones.

The phone's 184-MHz processor is fairly beefy for a feature phone, but it has to handle high-speed data, a high-res screen, and a UI with animations, so it bogs down a bit sometimes. The phone's media players are flexible, though their user interfaces are a bit sluggish. The TM506 supports MP3, M4A, and WMA files. It played our 15-fps 3GP and iPod-formatted MPEG-4 videos without a hitch, though it couldn't handle an H.264 video. Music sounded loud but tinny through the built-in speaker. You'll need to find a third-party adapter to attach any decent headphones, but hey, this isn't a Walkman phone.

You can save your photos and media in the phone's 25MB of free memory, or on a Sony M2 memory stick inserted in a slot in the side. We used a 1GB stick, but sizes up to 8GB are available.

This stylish 3G handset works on a quad band network & HSDPA 2100 network which allows the user to enjoy worldwide roaming but the full network coverage is dependent on the users chosen network provider. The phone supports GPRS & EDGE technology which allows the user to experience high speed data transfer rates when transferring files between the Nokia 6260 Slide & other devices. The built in WLAN Wi-Fi technology allows the user to connect to the Web via a local WLAN or a nearby located hot spot which gives the user freedom when connecting to the Web. The 3G HSDPA technology provides high speed Internet connectivity as well as allowing the user to multitask on their handset such as taking a call whilst browsing the Web. The Nokia 6260 Slide comes with a USB port which allows the user to use a USB cable to connect their 3G phone to other devices such as the user's PC, printer or many more compatible USB devices. The Bluetooth® technology allows the user to gain a wire free connection to other Bluetooth® compatible devices which are up to ten meters apart from the 6260 Slide allowing the user to transfer files & data without using a cabled connection. Design nokia 5500

The nokia 5500 is basically the 4WD of mobile phones. Well, maybe a small and sporty Rav4 anyway. nokia 5500 shines under conditions where other phones fail, with a rugged case that is resistant to water, shocks and dust. A coin-lock mechanism at the back protects the battery while a rubberised seal swings around to cover the charger connection at the bottom.

The 5500's trim figure mirrors those of its fitness-focused target market. As Nokia explains in an introductory booklet bundled with the 5500, the handset is for: "the sport user, he's an individual who enjoys being in the gym, always on the move or just hanging out with family and friends." We don't see the 5500 Sport as being gender-specific; its casing blends silver, dark grey and black shades into an attractive and stylish, though somewhat stark, looking handset. The successor to the Nokia 5140i, the 5500 has been trimmed down to a compact 107 by 45 by 18mm. Its light weight (103 grams) combined with the smooth rubberised grip make the 5500 Sport feel both comfortable and secure in your palm.

The square screen, although relatively small for a smartphone, is sharp and vibrant with support for 262K colours. Beneath it are two user-definable shortcut keys and a four-way scroll key. It took us a while to find the Call and End keys -- unlike most mobile phones that display these prominently as big red and green buttons, on the 5500 they are 5mm slivers pointing diagonally inwards from the edge. To cycle between the 5500's music player, sports features and phone mode, there is a convenient Instant Swap key on the right. It would be better if Nokia made the applications customisable, especially when people are used to having a dedicated camera key there. Below this are the infrared port and Edit key, the latter used in messages to quickly access text settings. The left side hosts the volume keys and a push-to-talk shortcut, which essentially turns your phone into a long-distance walkie-talkie using GPRS.

Features nokia 5500

Fitness features such as a pedometer and a calorie counter for preset activities such as walking, cycling, running, rowing and stair-stepping might attract wannabe athletes initially, but if getting into shape is you're primary goal, the 5500 doesn't hold much over a $50 pedometer or a Carmen Electra Aerobic Striptease tape. There's no heart rate monitor, but you can schedule in exercise times and track your progress using the crummy inbuilt software. Another interesting feature, which we assume works using the same sensor that powers the pedometer, is tapping the upper half of the phone to have text messages read to you in a rather dreary British accent. The same eerie voice can also attempt to read out contact's names when a call is received.

Although the 5500's 2-megapixel camera has no flash of its own, there is a bright torch at the top of the handset which is invaluable when you're trying to find your keys at night, and is easily switched on by holding down the star key. Videos can be recorded at resolutions up to 176x144 pixels (think the size of a postage stamp); clips stored in Real, MPEG-4 and H.263 formats can be played back. A wide range of digital music is also supported, including MP3, AAC and WMA. There's also an FM radio onboard, but you need to connect the supplied stereo headset to use it.

The 5500's 10MB of internal memory seems stodgy, but microSD cards up to 1GB can be added. There is an RSS reader and xHTML browser with Nokia Minimap technology, but the 30mm square screen is far from ideal for Web browsing.

Perfomance nokia 5500

We're always hesitant about taking tech toys near water, but we can honestly say the 5500 Sport kept on ticking after we dunked it in a glass of water (on three separate occasions). The 5500 also survived being dropped in a small puddle of water and having beer spilt on it at the pub -- unfortunately we didn't have rubber gloves at hand to test what has put many a phone to rest: the fatal drop into a toilet bowl.

Thanks to the Pop-Port-to-3.5mm headphone adaptor, you're not stuck having to use Nokia's tinny headphones for music. The set Nokia supplies are of the hook behind the ear variety, which keeps them in place while jogging, but they are awkward to put on and sacrifice music quality as they don't sit snugly inside your ear.

Although you can enter your height and weight to improve the accuracy of the pedometer software, the Nike + iPod Sports Kit can be fine tuned to your exact pace and would be our recommendation for those serious about fitness.

Several of our test photos from the 5500's 2-megapixel camera came out blurry. Even on the highest quality setting, colours were not always represented accurately -- blacks tended to be green.

Nokia claims up to ten days' standby time and four hours' talk time. With light use of the 5500 Sport purely as a phone, we managed to get about four days between charges. Expect less when frequently using the 5500's extra features, such as games, music or Bluetooth.

Although the fitness features seem gimmicky to us, we would not hesitate recommending the mid-range as a well-built, sturdy phone, as long as you don't need larger-than-life keys. Nokia's Series 60 smartphone operating system might be overkill for this target market, but it does allow you to install additional software. It is a tri-band handset that will work most places in the world where there is coverage.

When Private Call and SMS Guard is started for the very first time it reminds a user the trial period of time and some free services, then it will be pushed to the background automatically (when “Autostart” is set to “ON”). In this case, a user does not manually need to push Private Call and SMS Guard to the background when a phone is booted since a user may not want to manipulate Private Call and SMS Guard in every of the boot. If a user wants to do something using Private Call and SMS Guard.
A user may also use “ABC” key + “0″ key to bring Private Call and SMS Guard to foreground if it is in the background. It provides a quick way to switch to the application. For “QWERTY” keyboard, a user may use “Ctrl” + “S” key combination to bring the application to foreground.

Occupying a space at the top of Nokia's multimedia-driven Nseries phone range is the N92, whose selling point is being able to play live digital TV broadcasts.

Upside
We had a gander at the N92 during Nokia's product showcase, and were able to catch the cricket live on the impressively optimised 42.4 by 56.64 millimetre screen. While we've come across real-time TV broadcasts from the 3 mobile network when reviewing 3G phones, the visual details -- such as the position of the cricket ball -- are often difficult to make out on relatively small screens. Shows come through crystal clear as the N92 contains a DVB-H (digital video broadcast for handhelds) receiver, rather the patchy video streams we've seen from 3G networks. The N92 is different; everything about it, from the screen ratio to the design of the buttons to the speakers, is planned with television watching in mind. Rather than being a novelty or a way to fill in the time on a train, the live broadcast offering is like having a mini television in your pocket. You'll even be able to see where that cricket ball lands.

Battery life for has been quoted as four hours' worth of TV watching, or 14 days standby, which was better than expected. The N92 is also big on connectivity. Its ability to connect to a wireless network (802.11b/g) means you can transfer files between the phone and your wireless-enabled home computer without needing to be in the same room.

You can also send photos taken with the 2 megapixel camera direct to compatible printers via PictBridge or Bluetooth. We were given a demonstration using PictBridge and an HP Photosmart Compact Photo printer, and were impressed with the speed and simplicity of converting a happy snap from digital to paper.

Downside
A big screen means a big phone, and the N92 is pretty darn hefty. Even those accustomed to the large form factor of many 3G phones may be surprised at how chunky this model is.

The keypad is also a bit awkward to use for dialling and texting, as it has been designed to be used while in the screen-watching configuration. In fact, making calls or sending messages with this phone appear to be incidental features -- it's all about the multimedia.

Outlook
Trials are taking place with broadcasters to determine whether mobile live TV will have a long and lucrative future in the Australian market, so it could be a year or so before we see a comprehensive television programme on the N92. The phone is planned for release in mid 2006, so we'll need to wait at least that long before seeing Warnie in crystal-clear miniature.

Price-wise, no dollar amount has been set yet, but we're hazarding a guess that it won't exactly be cheap to buy a combined television/phone with a huge list of features.

Nokia's N96 fires new shot at iPhone

The new Nokia n96 has just about every multimedia trick, including TV, video, and an online music store, that the Finns can throw at it. It's a beast of a phone, and we mean that as a compliment. Nokia certainly has been busy of late. The stunning E71 impressed us with it's QWERTY design, and the 6210 Navigator looks like maintaining Nokia's edge in GPS. The biggest Nokia phone to launch this year though, is arguably the N96 - the new version of Nokia's do-it-all "multimedia computer". While the Nokia N96 is a different beast to the iPhone, given the multimedia angle, it's hard to avoid comparisons. And while this is no iPhone in the design stakes (though at 125g it is surprisingly lighter), the video functionality alone makes the N96 hard to ignore.

Better mobile TV than we've seen before from Nokia

Mobile TV is a potential killer app for devices like this. The N96 ups the ante with TV-out, and "3D stereo" speakers, plus an integrated kick stand. Video playback is also now 30 frames per second - the demos we saw today looked less "choppy" than previously. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the N96 is the DVB-H capability - which is the mobile equivalent of digital TV. Unlike Foxtel Mobile, which uses streaming data, DVB-H is broadcast TV. Right now in Australia, DVB-H mobile TV isn't available - something Nokia and other companies are lobbying the government about. Of all the mobile phone services getting hyped now, this is the one we're waiting to get off the ground.

Meantime, Nokia has partnered with BBC - N96 buyers get 1 of any four full series of BBC TV shows, including Little Britain. Storage: The N96 ups the storage quota to iPhone 3G levels, with 16GB onboard, plus the ability to increase this to 24GB with microSD.

Navigation : This is another of the N96's key strengths over devices like the iPhone. Unlike the iPhone's Google Maps experience, Nokia gives you onboard maps, the new Nokia Maps 2.0 interface. The killer though is voice guided turn-by-turn navigation. If you've used any of Nokia's new GPS phone, such as the 6220, you'll have discovered that turn by turn isn't free. There's a free trial license, but after that you'll need to pay. The N96 also drops the trial license to 3 months.

Battery life : Interestingly, Nokia's technical people we spoke to today say there's been no major upgrade on the battery. The tech specs claim you'll get up to 160min talk time on 3G (a bit over 2.5 hours), and 200 hours standby on 3G. With the phone offline, you should get in theory 5 hours of video playback.

Nokia Music Store : Here's where Apple is leading the pack, and we think Nokia needs to play catch-up if phones like the N96 are to succeed against the iPhone. Nokia's N96 lets you share photos and video online with Nokia's "Share on Ovi" site, and has music and video playback (including Flash and Windows Media Video and MPEG4) with 16GB of onboard storage. On the software side, the good news is Nokia tells us there's a new desktop version of the Nokia music software on the way in the next couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see just how the Nokia desktop experience compares with the iPhone.

Performance : A big issue we've found in many leading smartphones, including Nokia's own N95, is lag when navigating menus. The one exception is the E71, where a better processor has worked wonders for response times. We were keen to see if things have improved with the N96. Nokia's product people are reluctant to talk about processors, only telling us that tweaks have been made to make the processor use more efficient. In the brief time we had to play with the N96 at launch this morning, it did seem slightly faster than the N95. Does the ultimate "multimedia computer" make the ultimate phone?
All-up Nokia has everything in place hardware and spec-wise for the N96 to rule the roost when it comes to do-it-all phones for mobile music and video. The big challenges we see are Mobile TV, which is yet to take off in Australia, and the desktop music and video interface, where Apple has up till now been the gold standard for usability.

Nokia E66 Complete Review

The next Nokia in the queue is the E71’s sister phone, the E66, but we’re not quite as taken with it. It doesn’t have a Qwerty keyboard for starters, so entering text isn’t as easy as it is on the E71. And there’s no touchscreen for handwriting recognition or stylus text entry, as with Windows Mobile Professional handsets.

We were bowled over last month when we came face to face with the first of Nokia’s new smartphones, the E71. Its combination of usability, battery life and business features saw it elevated to the lofty position of A-List champion, rudely elbowing aside our long-standing favourite, the HTC TyTN II.

The E66 has other potential advantages over the E71 too. While it’s a little thicker (4mm to be precise), the E66 is also considerably narrower, which means it’s slightly easier to slide into your pocket. It’s also an easier phone to use – its simple numeric keypad is equipped with large, easy-to-press buttons which make it much quicker to tap out phone numbers than on the small keys of its stablemate.

And it looks at least as good as its compadre, complete with shining metal panel at the rear, chrome trim around the front panel and mirror-backed control cluster. It’s available in white or grey, and both colour schemes look very nice indeed. The extra thickness of the E66 can be attributed to its sliding mechanism, which actuates with a pleasing thunk to reveal the numeric keypad underneath.

Don’t stop reading just yet, though, because the E66 is still highly capable. And for those who prefer a phone with a numeric keypad, it’s clearly a more appropriate choice.teu bisag

The only weakness we could find in the physical design was the location of the delete key. This is situated, rather thoughtlessly, just below the directional pad on the shortcut key cluster, and we kept hitting it by accident as we moved from screen to screen on the phone’s OS.

Start using the E66 and the differences between it and the E71 begin to melt away. The screen is equally as good – it’s bright, colourful and transflective, which means it’s just as easy to view outside in bright sunshine as it is in the office.

It’s extremely nippy to use – a world away from the wading-though-treacle experience we had with the HTC Touch Diamond – and for mobile data it boasts high-speed HSDPA connectivity, plus a Wi-Fi adapter for office and hotspot use. There’s also Bluetooth 2.0, an FM radio tuner and assisted GPS.

The latter is especially impressive: fire up Google Maps, switch on the GPS feature in the menu and the phone will pick up a satellite lock in well under a minute – impressive for a phone-based receiver. Nokia’s own mapping software comes preinstalled to take advantage of it, and even offers turn-by-turn driving instructions at a $16 per month premium, but it’s not as responsive as Google Maps for general use.

Email support is good too, with brilliantly simple POP3 and IMAP setup – we had a test Gmail account up and running in minutes, with just a username and password required – and Nokia’s Microsoft Exchange client is ready to go for over-the-air synchronisation of email, contacts, tasks and calendar entries.

The former offers an impressive amount of control, allowing you to specify a schedule for the push email function – turning it on during working hours, Monday to Friday, for instance, and having it pick up mail once an hour when you’re at home.

There is another small advantage to owning an E66 over an E71 – it has a sensor inside, like the iPhone’s and the HTC Touch Diamond’s, which will flip the screen from landscape to portrait mode automatically as you move the phone around in your hand. Flip the phone over when a call arrives and that same sensor will silence the ring for you – handy if you’re a bit forgetful about switching to Silent mode for meetings.

The only other difference between the two phones, in terms of significant features, is that the E71 includes a fully activated version of QuickOffice, while the E66 does not. This means you can only view Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents rather than edit them – but then this is less of an issue with a phone that has a numeric keypad.

Battery life is a bigger concern. Where the E71 included a monster 1530mAh lithium polymer battery, which lasted for three to four days of light use, the E66’s battery is only 1000mAh. On a single charge you’ll be lucky to get more than two-and-a-half days of light use out of it – above average for an HSDPA-equipped smartphone, but nowhere near as impressive as the E71.

There’s also no BlackBerry client for the E66 just now, an omission we hope will be remedied in time. And it’s worth pointing out again that the E66, like the E71, can’t be charged over USB. The prevalence of the new skinny-plug Nokia charger blunts this somewhat – there’s usually someone nearby with one to hand – but we’d still like the option to be able to charge while we sync without having to connect to the mains.

So the E66 turns out to be a bit of a mixed bag. It’s a beautiful phone, no doubt, and a very capable one at that. It’s stuffed full of features, including the essential push email via Microsoft Exchange, and it’s nippy and easy to use.

Its weaker battery life and lack of any kind of fast text entry means it can’t be a serious contender for the crown of best smartphone ever. But if you’re resolutely against Qwerty keyboards, it’s well worth a place on your shortlist.

Apple iPhone vs Nokia N95

Will Apple's iPhone reshape the mobile phone market? Are there better devices actually available already? We put the iPhone head-to-head with its competition to see how it stacks up.

Gadget aficionados will no doubt have heard that Apple is launching the iPhone, its first mobile phone, in the US on 29 June. Here in Australia, though, we'll have to wait until next year to get our grubby mitts on the sleek multimedia device. Apple recently published information comparing its hot little handset with the already available Nokia N95, Samsung BlackJack, Palm Treo 750 and the Blackberry Curve 8300.

Apple also recently upped the stated battery life of the iPhone from five to eight hours of talk time, 250 hours of standby, five hours of Internet browsing, seven hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback -- 10 hours longer than Apple's hard-disk based iPods.

But why is the iPhone generating so much hype? It's just a phone after all, isn't it? While it does have an elegant design and attractive interface, what could be in this device that's revolutionary? We compare it side-by-side with the N95, the top-of-the line handset from the world's No. 1 phone maker, at the moment, Nokia. We've also colour coded our table to indicate in green which device's feature, in our opinion, comes out on top.

All the buzz these days is about the Apple iPhone (not to be confused with the Linksys iPhone). I have to admit, the iPhone is pretty cool, and I was really excited about it for a few hours. Then, reality started to sink in and I realized that the iPhone is probably not something for me. Here are 10 reasons why I’d like to buy a Nokia N800 instead of an Apple iPhone. I realize that there are areas where the iPhone will be better than the N800, I just don’t think it’s worth the extra cost and lack of freedom that comes along with having an iPhone.

1. Price

Nokia N800: $399 (get the new, better, cheaper Nokia N810)
Apple iPhone: $499 or $599 (Plus 2 year Cingular service contract)

2. Open Source

The Nokia N800 is a Linux device based on a modified version of Debian GNU/Linux that they call “Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition”. Nokia created the open source Maemo development platform for the 770 and N800. They’ve worked hard to encourage developers to port applications to this platform. You can find more info at maemo.org.

The iPhone is far from open. We’re still not sure what Steve Jobs meant when he said that the iPhone runs “OS X”, but it’s most certainly not the full-blown “Mac OS X” that comes on a new Macbook. While the core of the phone’s OS may someday be open sourced (like Darwin), it’s highly unlikely that Apple will ever open source the entire OS or even share the iPhone APIs that would allow developers to make new iPhone apps.

3. Third Party Applications

Nokia strongly encourages 3rd party developers to make software for their N800 and 770 products. There is quite a lot of software available for Nokia’s platform and most (if not all) of it is free. You can install geeky apps such as VNC and VIM, or one of more than 35 games that are available on the Maemo site.

Apple has stated that they will not allow 3rd party applications on the iPhone. Apple want’s to control everything from the top down. They’re not even supporting Flash or Java (I guess that would make it too easy for developers to bypass Apple’s control and offer applications for the iPhone).

4. No Service Contract with Cingular Needed

With the Nokia N800, you can access the internet via Wi-Fi or with a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. This allows you the freedom to use the mobile provider of your choosing.

To get an iPhone, you’ll need to sign up for a 2-year contract with Cingular. Nobody knows exactly how much this plan will cost, but I’m sure it won’t be cheap. Data plans are traditionally extremely expensive in the US and I’m sure Cingular and Apple will make loads of money overcharging customers for internet access.

The practice of locking mobile phones to a single mobile provider has become quite annoying in the United States. While the rest of the world can freely change providers by simply swapping out a SIM card, US customers are usually stuck with multi-year contracts and locked phones. Apple is continuing this tradition by locking all iPhones sold in the US to the Cingular network.

5. Removable Storage

The Nokia N800 has two memory slots that support a range of memory cards (SD, miniSD, microSD, MMC and RS-MMC). This allows you to keep one card in the device for a more permanent storage solution, and still have a slot available for cards from your camera or other device. With the falling price of memory cards, you could have several cards with music and videos tucked away in the carrying case that comes with the N800.

Apple’s iPhone has no removable storage. This is probably by design as it helps justify a higher priced model with more memory.

6. Better Audio and Video Codec Support

The N800 supports a wide range of audio and video formats. Supported audio formats are AAC, AMR, MP2, MP3, RA (Real Audio), WAV, WMA. You can play videos in the following formats: 3GP, AVI, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-4, RV (Real Video), and Flash Video (YouTube!). That covers just about anything you’d ever want to play on a media device. With the open nature of the N800’s OS, more codec support can be expected from 3rd party developers. You can also use the N800 with Real’s Rhapsody music service (if you prefer your music with DRM). You can even stream audio and video from networked computers!

The iPhone, like the iPod, plays only Apple sanctioned audio and video formats. This means you can play content from the iTunes store as well as MP3 audio and MPEG video. No streaming to the phone or playing competing formats.

7. It’s Not a Cell Phone

The N800 is not a cell phone. At first, I thought this was a bad thing. After thinking about it, I realized that I don’t need (or even want) to haul around a mini computer with me everywhere I go. Sometimes I just need a simple phone. If I’m heading to the grocery store, working in the yard, or in some busy place where my phone might get damaged or stolen, then I’d rather just tuck a simple mobile phone in my pocket and head for the door. With the N800, I can just leave it at home when I know I won’t need it.

Apple wants the iPhone to become the device that you always have with you. That sounds great at first, but how long do you think it’ll last in the New York subway? There are times when having a regular phone is more convenient. Perhaps it will be possible to switch your SIM card from the iPhone to a secondary phone when needed, but Apple hasn’t said anything about this.

8. It is a VoIP Phone

The N800 can be used to for making VoIP calls via Gizmo and GoogleTalk. Skype support is coming in the second quarter of 2007. This means that you can make cheap (or even free) calls anytime you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. With Wi-Fi becoming more prevalent every day, this means you’ll soon be able to use your N800 to make calls from just about anywhere.

With the iPhone, you will need to make all your calls via Cingular. More money for Cingular and Apple.

9. Webcam for Video Conferencing

The N800 also has a built in webcam and supports video conferencing! How great would that be for your next conference call? Star-Trek-like video calls are not sci-fi for this device.

The iPhone has a camera, but no video conferencing.
